Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh — Wedding Procession of Dalits Stopped By An Upper Caste Village Head? Fact-Check

A video of a fight has gone viral, purporting that the head of an upper caste village in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, stopped a Dalit wedding procession.

Verified accounts on twitter, including @DalitTime tweeted “When the wedding procession of a Dalit girl arrived in Bulandshahr, UP, village head Yogendra Sharma blocked the way for the wedding procession by parking his car on the road in front of the house. When people protested, he took out his pistol. FIR has been registered against Pradhan…” . The tweet was made on Dec 8, 2023, which has received an about 27k views on X.

UP Congress (“@INCUttarPradesh“) tweeted “The wedding procession of a Dalit daughter had come to Bulandshahr. The wedding procession was passing through the road when the domineering village head suddenly parked his car on the road and blocked the way for the wedding procession. When the wedding guests protested, he took out his pistol. Atrocities against Dalits are not showing any signs of stopping in the state. Every day they are oppressed in some way or the other. Think! When a daughter’s wedding procession is being harassed like this, then what will these bullies think of the daughters of Dalits and their honour? Why are Dalits not understanding the trick of tricking Dalits on just 5 kg ration? Will this hide the anti-Dalit mentality of BJP?”

Several other accounts, including Piyush Rai (“@Benarasiyaa“), Nigar Parveen (“@NigarNawab“), VIKRAM (“@Gobhiji3“), Sachin Gupta (“@SachinGuptaUP“), @IAMCHindi, Satya Prakash Bharti (“@Satyamooknayak“), Villager Anuj Tomar (“@Da___Engineer“), @imayankindian also made the same claim that In the Bulandshahr district, a Dalit daughter’s wedding procession was stopped. Yogendra Sharma, the village head, parked his car on the road in front of the house, obstructing the procession’s path. He pulled out his pistol when the guests at the wedding protested. The police have clarified that there was a fight between both parties over the car passing when the village head was travelling by car along the same route. No wedding procession of Dalits was halted.

The official account of Bulandshahr Police (“@bulandshahrpol“) tweeted “A procession was taking place in village Pirauli under Salempur police station area. Just then the village head was going somewhere in his car on the same route, there was a dispute between the two parties regarding taking out the car. No incident like stopping the procession has come to light. In this regard #CO Shikarpur byte.” on Dec 8, 2023.

Propagandists are circulating videos with false claims to set their propaganda based on caste. ACoording to many users on the social media, an upper caste village head in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, is alleged to have stopped a Dalit wedding procession in a viral video where a brawl is shown. But, after proper research, analysis and fact-checking, we discovered that as per the police’s clarification, there was a disagreement between two parties regarding the passing of the car when the village head was driving along the same route. There was no halt to any Dalit wedding procession.
