Bishnupur, West Bengal — Old Video Of Villagers Chasing Away TMC Candidate Sujata Khan in Arambagh, Resurfaced as Recent: Fact-Check

A video purporting to show villagers chasing away a woman and carrying bamboo sticks has gone viral. It says that Sujata Khan, the Bishnupur candidate, intimidated Arambagh people to vote for the TMC in a recent incident.

Verified accounts on twitter, including @SaffronSunanda tweeted “Sujata Khan, TMC candidate from Bishnupur was threatening voters of Arambagh to vote for TMC or they will face consequences. Voters of Arambagh beat up Sujata Khan and other party workers and chased them away from there. Hindus of Bengal are fighting!!” on March 21, 2024. The tweet has received an about 500.4k views on X.

Several other accounts, including @aa_rishav, @Mahaveer_VJ, @NarendraVictory, @tisDev made the same claim that voters in Arambagh were threatened by TMC candidate Sujata Khan of Bishnupur to vote for the party or face consequences. The archive can be read from above.

What is the Actual Truth About this Incident? : Fact

In actuality, this is an outdated clip from the 2021 West Bengal assembly elections. We visited Times of India, which published an article on this incident on April 6, 2021 with the headline “West Bengal polls: TMC candidate Sujata Mondal allegedly attacked in Arambagh”. In the Arambagh constituency of West Bengal, TMC candidate Sujata Mondal is said to have been attacked. According to the TMC, the party would move the Election Commission. ‘BJP workers targeted her’, according to Mondal. However, the TMC was held accountable for the same by the BJP activists.
