Havana, Cuba— Old Image Of Protestors Marching to Revolution Square to Mark May Day in 2022, Falsely Linked To Protests For Food Shortages and Power Outages: Fact-Check 

It has been claimed that one recent photo from Cuba that has been shared recently shows an ample number of people on a road.

Verified accounts on twitter, including @guyverhofstadt tweeted “Last week in Cuba …a huge sign of hope in a world dominated by brutal autocracy (Putin) and cruel terrorism (ISIS)!” and shared the image of the massive crowd on March 25, 2024. The tweet has received an about 83.7k views on X.

What is the Actual Truth About this Incident? : Fact

In actuality, this is an old photo of thousands of demonstrators in Havana, Cuba, to mark May Day in May 2022, marching to Revolution Square. The picture is outdated and has nothing to do with the current demonstrations about power outages and food shortages. We visited Reuters, which posted the same photos on May 2, 2022 with the heading “May Day protests around the world”. The same picture was posted with the caption “Thousands march to Revolution Square to mark May Day, in Harvana, CUBA.” For more clarification, we also went to Morning Star, which also posted about this on May 2, 2022 with the heading “Tributes paid to former Cuban foreign minister Ricardo Alarcon”. Tributes have been given to Ricardo Alarcon, the former foreign minister of Cuba, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 84 in Havana. The politician was a member of the Cuban Communist Party’s central committee until 2013.
