Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh— Rape Victim and Accused Belong Same Community, Propagandists Circulate Communal Claims: Fact-Check

A few days ago, a distressing incident took place in the Kaptanganj area of Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh, prompting widespread concern. The incident involved an altercation wherein a young girl felt victimized. Misleading information started to circulate, particularly focusing on the religious identity of the victim. The claim suggested that a Muslim girl had been abducted and subjected to a horrendous crime. However, further investigation reveals a different story.

The misleading and fabricated news was shared by many, but the main ones being @MuslimSpaces, @DiwakarSax24594, @Satyamooknayak and @KashifArsalaan. They have a long history of spreading fake news according to their narratives.

Misleading Allegations

Various other news sources from Uttar Pradesh also reported on a video of Kushinagar in which a girl recounted the incident, emphasizing the religious background of the victim. The claim asserted that the perpetrators belonged to a different religious community, fueling a narrative of religious bias. However, a thorough investigation conducted by the police tells a different tale. Three individuals, identified as Qiamuddin, Jahagir, and Sikander Ali, were arrested in connection with the incident. Crucially, both the accused and the victim were from the same ‘Muslim’ community. Thus, the incident had no religious motivations, and action is being taken accordingly.

Kushinagar Police tweeted that under the direction of the Superintendent of Police, Dhaval Jaiswal, and under the supervision of Additional Superintendent of Police, Ritesh Kumar Singh, a concerted effort was made to arrest the suspects in the entire Uttar Pradesh. The police successfully arrested the accused, Qiamuddin, son of Khurshid; Jahangir, son of Jahid Khan; and Sikander Ali, son of Vakeel Ali Sakinan, from Malukahi Bazaar in the Kaptanganj area of Kushinagar district.

The Reality of the Situation

The misleading narrative circulating regarding the incident has been meticulously fact-checked and debunked. It is evident that this incident was not driven by religious differences as initially claimed. Both the accused and the victim hailed from the same community, underscoring the fallacy of the religious bias narrative. Following a precise analysis and fact-checking, our team has reviewed the claim. You can refer to the findings of this inquiry in the Twitter thread below.

Claim: The incident involving a young girl in Kaptanganj, Kushinagar, was driven by religious bias, targeting a Muslim girl from Uttar Pradesh and the accused belonged to a different community.
