Fact Check: Villagers shave man’s head over refusal to do forced labour in Jhansi, video circulates with casteist claims 

A video has circulated showing a group of individuals humiliating a person and shaving his head, initially claimed to be a caste-based hate crime against a Dalit person in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh. However, police reports indicate that both the accused and the victim are from the same community, suggesting that the incident is not linked to caste-based hatred.

Sharing the video on X (Formerly Twitter) propagandist media outlet @DalitTime wrote. “In Jhansi, a Dalit man’s head shaved when he refused to work as a labourer…. Is this behaviour with Dalits right?” (Translated from Hindi) 

Another propaganda account @love_donor_abhi has also disseminated the video and wrote. In Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, when a Dalit man refused to work as a labourer, casteist goons shaved his head… shameful

The truth about the viral video, Fact Check 

As soon as the posts containing the sensitive video and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the incident and found that the incident was unrelated to a caste-based or religion-based hate crime. 

To verify the claims made by the users. We ran a relevant keyword search which led us to the Jhansi Police statement regarding the incident. According to the police, both the accused and the victim belong to the same community. Hence, the incident is not related to caste-based hate.

Later, police also released a video statement and clarified that both the accused and victim belonged to the same community. Three accused have been arrested and further action is being taken.

Therefore, it is evident from Police sources that the incident was not related to a caste-based hate crime against a Dalit individual as the accused and victim belonged to the same community.

Social media users, influencers and propagandists are circulating sensitive videos with misleading claims to set their narrative based on caste.
