Fact Check: Atika is not a Bangladeshi Hindu woman, nor was she killed during the violence

An image of a woman is being shared online with claims that her name is Atika and she supported the students’ protest against the Sheikh Hasina government in Bangladesh. When the protest became anti-Hindu, Atika was raped and murdered by extremists. However, these claims are not true, she is not a Hindu woman, nor was she killed during the violence.

Sharing the image on X (Formerly Twitter) @INarsinghvani wrote, “Hindus, the name of this foolish girl was Atika. She took part in the student movement of Bangladesh with great enthusiasm. She even became a student leader. As the movement became an anti-national movement in Bangladesh. Gradually it became an anti-Hindu movement, they did not stop there, they started killing Hindus. Then what happened, for the Jihadis of Islam every Hindu is a Kafir. This same Atika was raped and killed by the Jihadis”.

The truth about the claims about Atika, Fact Check

As soon as the posts containing the image and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the image and found that the image was not related to a Hindu woman.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed a reverse image search using Google Lens. This led us to Facebook posts containing the image claiming to be of Atika Binte Hussain. During research, we also found multiple reports containing Atika’s image.

According to the reports (1, 2), the woman in the image is Atika Binte Hussain, president of the Chhatra League, the student wing of the Awami League. She is a supporter of Sheikh Hasina and has never protested against her government. She is alive, and the story circulating about her is entirely fabricated.

Therefore, it is evident from verified sources that the image doesn’t depict a Hindu woman but a Muslim woman and she was not killed.
