Fact Check: Bangladesh captured 1,008 km² of Indian territory during recent border tension?

Pakistan-based propaganda accounts falsely claim that Bangladesh has seized 1,008 km² of Indian territory during recent border clashes. This claim, including a statement by a Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) officer about taking control of a 5-km stretch in North 24 Parganas, has been debunked. The Border Security Force (BSF) clarified there has been no territorial change, dismissing the statement as baseless and provocative.

Making a post on X (Formerly Twitter) serial fake news peddler and propagandist account @NavCom24 wrote, “Bangladesh has reclaimed 1,008 km² of territory occupied by India during recent border clashes.”

Several other users, influencers and propagandists have also disseminated the same claims. Their posts can be seen here, @EliasHossainX, @PSYWAROPS, @asadnasir2000.

Moreover, a Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) officer claimed that Bangladesh had taken control of a 5 km stretch on the Indian side along the international border. This claim was reported by media outlets and social media users thedailystar, @SATimes_TV, @BDReborn2024, @The_RifT_.

The truth behind the claims shared as Bangladesh captured Indian territory, Fact Check

As soon as the posts containing the claims made by propagandists came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis regarding the claims. We found that these claims were false and fabricated.

To verify the claims made by propagandists. We performed relevant keyword searches and found a report containing a statement of BSF. BSF Deputy Inspector General (South Bengal Frontier) NK Pandey dismissed the statement as “baseless and irresponsible,” asserting that there has been no change on the ground. Pandey emphasized that the BGB commander’s claim was an attempt to provoke tensions, adding, “We continue to use boats to patrol the river. There has been no change in our access to the Kodala river.”

Therefore, it is evident from verified sources that the claims about Bangladesh capturing Indian territory were false and self-invented.
