Fact Check: Seven people killed in ship attack in Bangladesh’s Chandpur, video circulates with misleading claims

A highly sensitive and distressing video showing blood splattered on the floor and several individuals—some injured, unconscious, or deceased—lying motionless has been shared online, claiming it depicts targeted violence against Hindus or minority communities in Bangladesh. However, the video is related to the victim of the ship which was targeted in Chandpur, where seven people were killed.

Sharing the video on X (Formerly Twitter) propagandist account @ajaychauhan41 wrote, “Bangladesh is a death orgy today. Bangladesh has become a hell for Hindus. A total of 65 people have died across the country in the last 72 hours. 8 people were brutally murdered on the MV Al Bakhera ship in Chandpur.”

The truth about the video from Bangladesh, Fact Check 

As soon as the posts containing the sensitive video and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the incident and found that the incident was not related to religious hate crimes against Hindus.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed relevant keyword searches and found multiple reports regarding the incident. According to the reports (1, 2), the video is related to the victim of the ship which was targeted in Chandpur, where seven people were killed. The victims in this incident primarily belong to the Muslim community. However, minorities in Bangladesh are facing extreme violence but this video is unrelated to religious hate crimes against minorities in the country. 

Therefore, it is evident from verified sources that the video was not related to religious hate crimes. It was related to the ship attack in Chandpur.
