Fact Check: Unverified video of men attempting to kidnap a woman circulated with self-invented claims

A video showing a group of 3-4 individuals attempting to abduct a burqa-clad woman, with her trying to escape, has been circulated with claims that a Muslim woman was kidnapped and sexually assaulted by Hindutva extremists in Gujarat, India. However, these claims are false and unfounded. The video is not recent and has been online since at least October 20, 2024. It appears to be staged, although its authenticity has yet to be confirmed.

Sharing the video on X (Formerly Twitter) Serial fake news peddler and propagandist account @PSYWAROPS wrote. 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 #𝐆𝐮𝐣𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐭, 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐚. A woman in a Burqa and Hijab was abducted and taken to a vacant house, where she was gang-rạpẹd by four #Hindus, reportedly linked to the #RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh).

As soon as the posts containing the video and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the video and found that the video was unverified and no such incident occurred recently.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed a reverse image search of some key frames from the viral video using Google Lens. This led us to a Facebook post containing the same video uploaded on October 20, 2024. But we couldn’t find any credible sources. The video was uploaded by a Bangladeshi account. 

We also performed relevant keyword searches and couldn’t find any reports supporting the claims.

Therefore, it is evident from D-Intent Data’s Fact Check that the video was unverified and has been available online since at least October 20, 2024.
