Fact Check: Video of the restaurant set on fire in Bangladesh falsely shared as a temple

Recently, a video depicting a temple-like structure burning has been circulating on social media platforms with the claim that extremists set the Hindu temple on fire in the ongoing violence in Bangladesh. However, D-Intent Data has discovered that the video doesn’t show a temple but a restaurant belonging to a Muslim individual.

Video from Bangladesh disseminated with misleading claims

Several users, influencers and propagandists have shared the video and made communal claims.

Sharing the video on X (Formerly Twitter) @randomsena wrote, Another Hindu temple set on fire. Where is the human chain now? Retweet to amplify. Later, he deleted the post.

Propaganda account @SaffronSunanda has also disseminated the video and said, One more Hindu Temple set on fire by Bangladeshi barbarian Islamists. Where are the Brothers of LKFC Zubair who were protecting Hindu temples in Bangladesh? Share this widely and let the world see Islamic barbarism.

Another propaganda account Jitendra Pratap Singh (@jpsin1) has also posted the video and wrote, Hindu minorities are not safe in Muslim-majority Bangladesh. A Hindu temple is burning in Bangladesh. Also, violence is going on in several districts.

Several other users, influencers and propagandists have shared the video and made similar communal claims. Their posts can be seen here. @visegrad24, @be_political123, @HinduVoice_in, @stillgray, @Minakshishriyan

The truth about the viral video from Bangladesh, Fact Check

As soon as the posts containing the video and claims came to our notice, we conducted research and found that the video didn’t show a burning temple. In reality, it shows a restaurant set on fire by a violent mob in Satkhira, Bangladesh.

To verify the claims made by the users, we performed a reverse image search of some key frames from the viral video on Google which led us to YouTube vlogs and media reports containing the same structure.

The YouTube vlog video was uploaded more than six months ago, according to the vloggers, the temple-like structure is not a temple but a coffee restaurant named, ‘Raj Palace’, as per the description, the owner of the restaurant and place is Kazi Shahzada bhai.

Therefore, it is clear from D-Intent Data’s fact check that the viral video does not show a temple burning but shows a Muslim man’s restaurant being burnt down by miscreants.
