EXPLAINED:
As the 19-year-old girl, who was set on fire after she turned down a proposal in Jharkhand’s Dumka, succumbed to her injuries on Sunday, a video of the accused smiling in police custody has surfaced online.
The accused, Shahrukh, could be seen smiling nonchalantly when he was handcuffed and was being taken to a police vehicle.
The video has been widely shared on social media, where he was slammed by the users for his ‘shameless smile’.
Meanwhile, the district administration has imposed Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) which prohibits the gathering of four or more people in the concerned area, in a bid to maintain law and order amid widespread protests seeking justice for the deceased.
The incident took place in Dumka town on Tuesday when the accused poured petrol on the woman from outside the window of her room when she was asleep and set her on fire.
The victim, a student of Class 12, had been first admitted to Phulo Jhano Medical College and Hospital in Dumka in critical condition with 90 per cent burns. Later, she was referred to Ranchi’s Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) for better treatment.
