Sultanpur Lodhi, Punjab — Two Nihangs Groups Clashed With Each Other, Propagandists Circulate Religious Persecution: Fact-Check

There is a video circulating that purports to show an altercation between Sikhs and police in Sultanpur Lodhi. A Gurdwara was allegedly attacked by police, according to some users.

Verified accounts on twitter, including Ghulam Abbas Shah (“@ghulamabbasshah“) tweeted “#India Shootout between the Nihangs (also known as Dal Khalsa, is an armed Sikh warrior order originating in the Indian subcontinent) & Indian Police in the premises of Gurdawara Akal bunga Sahib, #Kapurthala. Reports of one police man died & several among the both are injured.” . The tweet post was made on Nov 23, 2023, which has received an about 16k views on X.

Several other accounts, including The Intel Consortium (“@IntelPk_“), Singh (“@APSvasii“) claimed the same that the police attacked a Gurdwara. The archive can be read from above.

What is the Actual Truth About this Incident? : Fact

The truth is that the two groups of Nihangs fought over control of the Gurdwara. Mann Singh’s group took over a Gurdwara and attempted to seize control of Baba Balbir Singh’s other Dera at Village Boosowal Road. During an operation, when police attempted to remove the occupants, they opened fire, killing one of the policeman. Gurdwara was not attacked by police. Everything is under control. 2020 also saw a violent altercation between the two groups.

Claim : A video purporting to show a fight between Sikhs and police in Sultanpur Lodhi is making the rounds. Some users, meanwhile, asserted that a Gurdwara was attacked by police.

Fact : The reality is that there was a conflict between two Nihang groups regarding control over the Gurdwara. Mann Singh’s group managed to seize control of one Gurdwara and attempted to seize another Dera belonging to Baba Balbir Singh at Village Boosowal road. A policeman was killed when the occupants fired at the police during an operation when they were trying to remove them. Police did not assault the Gurdwara. Everything is in control. 2020 saw a violent fight between the two groups as well.
