Cricket World Cup — FIR Registered Against Australian Cricketer Mitchell Marsh For Putting Legs On World Cup Trophy? Fact-Check

An FIR has been registered in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, against Australian cricketer Mitchell Marsh for putting legs on the World Cup trophy after winning the Cricket World Cup 2023, according to social media reports.

Verified accounts on X, including OpIndia.com (“@OpIndia_com“) tweeted the picture of the Australian cricketer Mitchell Marsh claiming that PM Modi has urged to ban him from playing in India after a FIR was filed against him for keeping his feet on the World Cup trophy. The tweet was made on Nov 25, 2023. The post went viral and has reached to an about 29.8k user accounts on twitter.

A popular Hindi News Channel, News24 (“@news24tvchannel“) also claimed that In Aligarh, a complaint was filed against Mitchell Marsh. Pandit Keshav has filed a complaint, claiming that “Marsh has insulted Indians by stepping on the World Cup trophy.”

Farid Khan (“@_FaridKhan“), COO @CricketRplus and Founder of cricden.net tweeted that Pandit Keshav, an RTI activist, has filed a FIR against Australia all-rounder Mitch Marsh. The complaint was filed in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. It claims that Marsh’s behaviour of dropping legs on the World Cup trophy harmed Indian cricket fans. He also sent a copy of the complaint to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting that Mitch Marsh not be allowed to play cricket in India in the future. The tweet has almost received an about 383.2k views. The tweet post was further reposted by more than 200 user accounts.

He additionally added “The complaint was filed by activist Pandit Keshav, alleging that Marsh has offended the sentiments of Indian cricket team fans. A BJP leader urinated on the face of a Tribal man, but it didn’t hurt sentiments. Manipur has been burning for the last 6 months but it didn’t hurt the sentiments of Indians. But a player showing dominance against the world keeping a trophy(debatable issue) has forced Indians to protest and file complaints. Truly, a new India is on its way to becoming Vishwaguru soon.”.

Several other popular twitter profiles, some of which are verified accounts, including Times Algebra (“@TimesAlgebraIND“), @mxtaverse, Humans of BIMARU (“@HumansofBimaru“), Cric Point (“@RealCricPoint“) tweeted the same picture on the social media. According to all of them, Mitchell Marsh put his legs on the World Cup Trophy and therefore, an activist from Uttar Pradesh filed a formal complaint against him, claiming that this offended Indian sentiments. It is a fact that this news is being made up and fake. According to Aligarh police, Mitchell Marsh has not been the subject of a formal complaint.

The final match of the Cricket World Cup 2023 between India vs Australia took place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Nov 19, 2023. AUS won by 6 wickets against India. Several misleading posts on the social media went viral after the match.
