There are rumours circulating that 88,000 crore rupees vanished midway through the printing process and did not reach to the RBI.

Verified accounts on twitter, including @LegendEconomist tweeted “88,000 crore rupees did not reach RBI from the printing press, disappeared midway: Big disclosure in RTI” on April 26, 2024. The tweet has received an about 236.3k views on X.

Several other accounts, including @BoltaHindustan made the same claim that 88,000 crore rupees vanished in in the middle and never made it to the RBI from the printing press. The archive can be read from above.

What is the Actual Truth About this Incident? : Fact

These are unfounded and fraudulent assertions. In June 2023, this news went viral, but RBI disproved it. So, the claim that 88,000 crore rupees did not reach RBI from the printing press and disappeared mid-way is not true at all. We visited The Print, which published an article on this incident on June 18, 2023 with the headline “RBI refutes reports of ‘missing’ Rs 88,032.5 cr, says claims based on ‘erroneous interpretation’ of data”. The Free Press Journal stated that data obtained through an RTI petition filed by activist Manoranjan Roy revealed that while India’s currency mints printed 8,810.65 million pieces of the newly designed Rs 500 note, the RBI only received 7,260 million of them. According to the news source, the lost notes totalled Rs 88,032.5 crore. “The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has come across reports circulating in certain sections of the media alleging missing banknotes printed by banknote printing presses,” the RBI said in a statement Saturday night. “The RBI emphasises that these reports are not correct.”
