Image Of Arab Slave Trader Rumaliza Circulated as Real Image Of Tipu Sultan: Fact-Check 

A picture purporting to be of Tipu Sultan has been circulated; it shows an elderly man.

Verified accounts on twitter, including @sanjoychakra tweeted “Distortion of history- One photo is of real Tipu Sultan. Then agenda driven darbari historians Romila Thapar, Ramachandra Guha & others applied Fair & Lov*ly on the picture of Tipu Sultan and the picture next to it was taught in books. Tipu the butcher was turned into a freedom fighter!!” on May 15, 2024. The tweet has received an about 97.5k views on X, contributing to the spread of the information.

The picture once again became viral with the misleading claim during 2018. The twitter user @AshwiniUpadhyay claimed that the Congress party manipulated the picture of Tipu Sultan and kept printing in Indian school text books, instead of attaching the original picture of him. The tweet was made on Nov 10, 2018.

alamy also posted the same picture with the description “Tippu Tip (1832 – June 14, 1905), real name Hamad bin Muhammad bin Juma bin Rajab el Murjebi, was a Swahili-Zanzibari slave trader, ivory trader, explorer, plantation owner and governor of Stanley Falls. He worked for a succession of the sultans of Zanzibar. Tippu Tip traded in slaves for Zanzibar’s clove plantations. As part of the large and lucrative ivory trade, he led many trading expeditions into Central Africa by constructing profitable trading posts that reached deep into the region. He bought the ivory from local suppliers and resold it for a profit at coastal ports. No photographer credited, undated.”, which is misleading on September 14, 2018.

What is Real Truth Behind This Picture? : Fact

The truth is that this picture has nothing to do with Tipu Sultan; rather, it depicts “Rumaliza,” an Arab slave trader. According to a number of stock photo sources, Tippu Tip, often known as Tib, was an African slave trader in the 19th century. We visited alamy, which added “Tippu Tip or Tib (1837 – June 14, 1905), real name Hamad bin Muḥammad bin Jumah bin Rajab bin Muḥammad bin Sa‘īd al-Murghabī, (Arabic: حمد بن محمد بن جمعة بن رجب بن محمد بن سعيد المرجبي‎), was a Swahili-Zanzibari trader. He was famously known by the natives of East Africa as Tippu Tib after the sounds that his many guns made. A notorious slave trader, plantation owner and governor, who worked for a succession of sultans of Zanzibar, he led many trading expeditions into Central Africa, involving the slave trade and ivory trade. He constructed profitable trading posts that reached deep into Central Africa.” in the description. When we looked up Tippu Tip, his pictures didn’t seem to correspond with the man in the widely shared picture. In our investigation, we discovered that an identical photo had been shared with another that purported to be of Mohammed bin Hassan “Rumaliza.” We discovered pictures of Rumaliza that matched the man in the widely shared picture. Rumaliza’s true name was Muhammad ibn Khalfan, and he was a slave trader. alamy posted the picture with the heading “Muhammad bin Khalfan bin Khamis al Barwani alias Rumaliza”.

Intent:

Political influencers circulate images of Arab slave traders as Tipu Sultan to set their narrative. An image that features an old age man has been shared, claiming to be Tipu Sultan’s actual image. The picture in question is unrelated to Tipu Sultan; rather, it depicts “Rumaliza,” an Arab slave trader. It is an image of Tippu Tip, often known as Tib, an African slave trader from the 19th century, according to stock photo sources. Despite our best efforts, Tippu Tip’s photos do not resemble the man in the widely shared picture. We discovered throughout our investigation that the identical photo had been shared alongside another that purported to be of Mohammed bin Hassan “Rumaliza.” Images resembling the man in the widely shared photo surfaced when we searched for Rumaliza. Rumaliza was actually a slave trader named Muhammad bin Khalfan.

Conclusion:

Fact : The fact is that this painting depicts “Rumaliza,” an Arab slave dealer, and has nothing to do with Tipu Sultan. During research, we found the same image was posted with another image claiming to be of Mohammed bin Hassan “Rumaliza.” We searched about Rumaliza and found images resembling the man in the viral photo. The real name of Rumaliza was Muhammad bin Khalfan; he was a slave trader.
