A few days ago in Badaun, Uttar Pradesh, a video of a fight between two women and a group of men has gone viral on social media. In the video, the men can be seen thrashing the women, while onlookers watch. The accompanying captions claim that the women were victims of goons or miscreants. However, a careful fact-check reveals a different story.
The incident occurred in Mahlauli village, under Bilsi police station, Badaun. Contrary to the misleading claims, the police have confirmed that the altercation was not an act of random violence. Rather, it was a heated dispute between two families over a property split. The altercation resulted in injuries to individuals on both sides.
The Uttar Pradesh Congress and another political party, RLD, seized the opportunity to circulate the video with false captions. The UP Congress Twitter account (@INCUttarPradesh) posted, “Some goons are mercilessly beating two women with bricks and stones on the road in Badaun. The roads of Uttar Pradesh have literally become crematoriums for women.” Similarly, RLD’s official handle (@RLDSpeaks) accused the government of failing in terms of law and women’s safety.
Badaun Police (@budaunpolice) swiftly responded with a video message to set the record straight. The incident occurred on August 7th and was an altercation between cousins over property division. Legal action has been taken against those responsible for the assault. The main accused has been arrested. The police also warned against spreading false rumours and assured that legal consequences would follow such actions.
It is evident that certain political parties and social media influencers have been capitalizing on this incident to push their own agendas. By sharing the video with false claims, they aimed to portray a sense of lawlessness and insecurity under the current government. This tactic serves to create a narrative of increased crime and chaos in the state.
