Fact Check: Old video of man flogging a couple publicly falsely shared as Bangladesh

A video showing a man publicly flogging a couple is being circulated with the claim that it is a recent incident from Bangladesh under the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus. However, the truth is that this is an old video from West Bengal, India. The incident occurred in Uttar Dinajpur district in July 2024, where the couple was punished over an alleged illicit relationship.

Sharing the video on X (Formerly Twitter) @ALBrahmanbaria wrote, โ€œThis is the name of the new Bangladesh! This is the so-called 2nd freedom! A militant regime is now running in Bangladesh under the leadership of Mohammad Yunus.โ€

Propaganda account @VHindus71 also shared the video and wrote, โ€œNew Bangladeshโ€. Later, the account deleted the post.

As soon as the posts containing the video and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the video. We found that the video was not from Bangladesh but an old incident from West Bengal, India.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed a reverse image search of some key frames from the viral video using Google Lens. This led us to media reports containing the same visuals. According to the reports (1, 2, 3), this is an old video from West Bengal, India. The incident occurred in Uttar Dinajpur district in July 2024, where the couple was punished over an alleged illicit relationship. The video is neither recent nor related to Bangladesh. Both the accused and the victims belonged to the same community.
