Fact Check: An old video of a scuffle between two groups of Muslims in Assam circulated with distorted claims

A video showing a crowd engaged in a brawl has been circulated, falsely claiming it depicts a fight between Indian Muslims and Rohingyas. The claims suggest that Rohingyas have captured the mosque because they consider Indian Muslims as converted. However, D-Intent Data has found that the video was from December 2022 and captures a clash over mosque management in Bilasipara, Dhubri, Assam.

Sharing the video on X (Formerly Twitter) propagandist account @ajaychauhan41 wrote, Rohingya Muslims – Indian Muslims – Fight. Rohingya Muslims took over the mosque of Indian Muslims because Rohingyas consider them converted Muslims.

The truth about the video from Assam, Fact Check

As soon as the posts containing the video and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the incident and found that the video was old and unrelated to Rohingyas.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed a reverse image search of some key frames from the video on Google Lens. This led us to several media reports containing the same visuals published at the beginning of January 2023. According to the media reports (1, 2, 3), a fight between two mosque-affiliated gangs took place in the Bilasipara neighbourhood of the Dhubri district on December 30, 2022, leaving one person dead and numerous others hurt.

As per the report, there was a violent altercation between the two sides over the position of the mosque management committee. There are no verified and credible sources supporting the claims about the involvement of Rohingyas. Therefore, it is evident from D-Intent Data’s Fact Check that the claims about Rohingyas’ involvement were not true.

Intent

Social media users, influencers and propagandists are circulating old videos with misleading claims to set their narrative based on religion.
