Fact-Check: False claims of Muslim places of worship demolished in Gujarat

Propaganda accounts are circulating claims that the Gujarat government demolished Muslim places of worship in Gandhinagar out of hatred. They present this as a communal attack against the Muslim community. In reality, the demolished structures were illegal constructions on government land, removed during a lawful anti-encroachment drive. The action had nothing to do with religion or targeting any specific community.

Influencer account @Kussikhuelafn posted:

“Gujarat, India 🚨 A Muslim place of worship has been demolished in Gujarat. Rahul Gandhi was right when he said that #Congress is a party of love and BJP is a party of hatred. I stand with #Muslims as a Hindu, because #India will become weak if 300 million Muslims revolt.”

Truth: Demolitions were lawful anti-encroachment actions, not communal targeting

As the false claim gained traction on social media, it drew our attention. The D-Intent Data Team conducted a detailed review of news reports, official statements, and local records. Our findings led us to a PTI News report stating that at least ten illegal structures were demolished in Gandhinagar’s Sector 30 as part of a lawful anti-encroachment drive on government land (PTI News).

Additionally, an IANS report confirmed that authorities in Pethapur cleared illegal encroachments of two dargahs that had been unlawfully registered under the Waqf Board.

Records showed over 1,500 edits, indicating long-term attempts to legitimize the structures (Gujaratijagran). These demolitions were part of routine administrative action and had nothing to do with targeting any religion or community.

Bhaskar Digital also reported on the “Mega Anti-Encroachment Campaign” in Gandhinagar, detailing the removal of illegal constructions from government land.

These demolitions were administrative actions against illegal encroachments and had nothing to do with religion or targeting any community. The online claims framing the action as communal were completely fabricated.

Intent:

Propaganda accounts are circulating videos of the anti-encroachment drive to set their narrative based on religion.
