Fact Check: Image of an Afghan girl suffering from Thalassemia circulated with misleading claims 

An image of a young girl with a visibly swollen abdomen has been circulating, accompanied by the false claim that it depicts an 11-year-old girl who was impregnated in an Islamic country. In reality, the photo is several years old and shows an 8-year-old Afghan girl suffering from Thalassemia, an inherited blood disorder that caused her liver and spleen to enlarge.

Sharing the image on X (Formerly Twitter) @FahimaBeg wrote, “What kind of religion is this? The monsters are not leaving the 11 year old girl.” (Translated from Hindi). 

Another user, @FarzeenBegum, also shared the image and wrote, “Islam, an 11-year-old girl is pregnant. I am disgusted by this religion. (Translated from Hindi).

The truth about the photos of girl, Fact Check 

As soon as the posts containing the images and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the images. We found that the images were old and unrelated to child marriage or pregnancy.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed reverse image search using Google Lens. This led us to initial posts (1, 2) containing the images. The images were posted to collect donations for her medical treatment as she was suffering from Thalassemia. 

The photo is several years old and shows an 8-year-old Afghan girl suffering from Thalassemia, an inherited blood disorder that caused her liver and spleen to enlarge. The image has no connection to child marriage, pregnancy or any criminal activity. Additionally, during research, we found a more detailed Fact Check about the images.

Therefore, it is evident from D-Intent Data’s Fact Check that the images were old and unrelated to child pregnancy.
