Fact Check: No Israeli Tourists Involved in Christmas Tree Fire in China

A video showing a large Christmas tree engulfed in flames is being circulated on social media with claims that Israeli tourists deliberately set the tree on fire in China and fled the scene. These claims are false and unsupported by any credible or verified evidence.

The false narrative was first shared by the account  @Jvnior, which presented the clip as “Breaking News” and alleged Israeli involvement. The claim was further amplified by other accounts, including @TheSaviour@SilentlySirs@newsibleasia, and @AlFarsi1201, helping it spread widely across social media platforms.

Truth: Chengdu Christmas Tree Fire Was Accidental, Not Linked to Israeli Tourists

As the false claim gained traction on social media, it drew our attention. The D-Intent Data Team conducted a detailed frame-by-frame investigation and keyword research. Our investigation traced the viral visuals to Facebook accounts such as Bonnie Ng and 1949後的斑紅歲月, which shared the footage without any mention of Israeli tourists.

Further verification led us to multiple credible reports. According to international media coverage, including a report by Mirror, the incident occurred in December 2024 at an outdoor shopping centre in Chengdu, China. Authorities stated that the fire likely started after a discarded cigarette butt ignited flammable cotton decorations, while other reports suggested a possible electrical short circuit.

Additionally, the @royanewsenglish YouTube channel reported that a short circuit triggered the fire. None of these sources mention Israeli tourists or any deliberate act. Officials treated the incident as an accident and urged public caution.

Intent:

Propagandists are circulating old videos from China with self-invented claims to set their narrative against Israel.
