Fact Check: No, Nepal’s Government Was Not Overthrown Due to Indian Interference

Pakistan-based propaganda accounts are spreading fabricated claims that the Nepali government, allegedly backed by India, has been overthrown due to Indian interference. These claims are baseless and misleading. In reality, the Oli government—or any other Nepali government—has never been “backed” by India. The ongoing protests in Nepal are fueled by domestic issues such as corruption, unemployment, and the recent ban on social media apps.

A propaganda account named @TacticalTribun posted this false claim, asserting that the “Indian-backed Nepali govt has been thrown out by public due to massive Indian interference in the country.”

Truth: Nepal Protests Driven by Internal Issues, Not Indian Interference

As this claim gained traction, it drew our attention. The D-Intent Data Team investigated using keyword research and credible sources. Our findings led us to AP News, which reported “Anger over corruption and nepotism fuel Nepal’s deadly protests over social media ban.”

Similarly, Reuters covered the movement, noting how “Gen Z protests over corruption and jobs ousted Nepal PM Oli.” The claims of Indian interference are completely false. The unrest in Nepal stems from internal issues—youth-led protests against corruption, unemployment, and restrictive policies. At no point has there been any verified evidence linking India to the current crisis.

Intent:

Propaganda accounts are pushing self-invented claims about the unrest in Nepal to build an anti-India narrative.
