Fact Check: Old Court Video Misrepresented as Judge Reprimanding Kolkata Police in Sharmistha Panoli Case

A video showing a judge sternly scolding police officials for abusing their authority is being shared with the claim that it depicts the judge reprimanding Kolkata Police for arresting influencer Sharmistha Panoli over her recent controversial comment during Operation Sindoor. However, this video is unrelated to her case. It actually features Justice Rajeev Ranjan Prasad of the Patna High Court reprimanding Bihar police officers in a separate incident from 2022.

An influencer @KreatelyMedia shared the video with a misleading claim, falsely linking it to the Sharmistha Panoli case.

Influencer @S_CRana_ji shared the video with the caption:

“यह वही जज साहब है जिन्होंने शर्मिष्ठा को बेल दी अगर वही है तो बहुत बहुत आभार इनका जो कलकत्ता पुलिस को ढंग से रेला है।”
(Translation: This is the same judge who granted Sharmistha bail. If it’s him, much respect for putting Kolkata Police in their place.)

Several other users, including @kattarhindu525 and @2_F_I_B, further amplified the misleading narrative on social media.

Truth: Viral Video Is Old Footage of Patna HC Judge, Unrelated to Current Incident

After the video started getting attention online, the D-Intent Data Team starts the investigation. Using a reverse image search and going through the footage frame by frame, we found that it originally came from the official YouTube channel of the Patna Court and was posted back in November 2022. The video has nothing to do with the Panoli case. In reality, it shows Justice Rajeev Ranjan Prasad of the Patna High Court speaking out against police officials for misusing their power. It seems the clip was taken out of context and edited to make it seem connected to the current situation.

Intent:

Influencers are circulating unrelated old videos with misleading claims to set their narrative regarding Sharmistha Panoli case.
