Fact Check: Old image of Syrian girl falsely shared as Palestinian victim of Israeli attack 

Recently, a disturbing image has gone viral on social media platforms. It features a young girl holding an oxygen mask over an infant’s face. Several users, influencers, and propagandists have shared the image claiming that a Palestinian girl passed away while holding the oxygen mask for her baby sister. However, D-Intent Data has discovered that the viral photo is not from Palestine but an old image of a Syrian girl.

Several users, influencers, propagandists and Hamas sympathizers have shared the image and claimed to be from Palestine. 

Sharing the image, a pro-Palestine and Hamas sympathizer account @Fx1Jonny on X (Formerly Twitter) said. 1 of the most heartbreaking pictures I’ve seen in 9 months. Her older sister slips away whilst continuing to hold the oxygen mask to her baby sister. If this doesn’t shatter your heart into a million pieces you are not human!!

Another pro-Palestine and Hamas sympathizer account @Oppressed0313 on X has also shared the image and wrote, PALESTINIAN GIRL PASSES AWAY AND CONTINUES TO HOLD A OXYGEN MASK FOR HER BABY SISTER.

Truth about the old image of a Syrian girl, Fact Check 

Upon noticing posts featuring an image depicting a young girl placing an oxygen mask on an infant’s face. We conducted thorough research and determined that the image does not originate from Palestine. Instead, it is an older image from Syria. 

To verify social media claims, we conducted a reverse image search on Google, leading us to multiple media reports featuring the same image.

During the research, we found the same image on ‘Getty Images’, according to the report. A Syrian girl holds an oxygen mask over the face of an infant at a make-shift hospital following a reported gas attack on the rebel-held besieged town of Douma in the eastern Ghouta region on the outskirts of the capital Damascus on January 22, 2018. 

The same image was also found on ‘The Guardian’  with the description. “A Syrian girl holds an oxygen mask over the face of an infant after a gas attack on Douma in 2018. 

Moreover, we also found a video containing the same image with the title. Syria Chemical weapons: Dozens killed in Douma gas attack. The video was uploaded in April 2018. 

Hence, it is evident from D-Intent Data’s Fact Check that the viral image showing a young girl holding an oxygen mask over the face of an infant is not from Palestine but an old image from Syria.

Many social media users, influencers and propagandists are circulating old images from Syria. And claiming to be from Palestine to set their narrative against Israel.
