Fact Check: Old video of cricketer Virat Kohli condemning violence and sexual assault against women falsely linked to Kolkata rape and murder

A video that shows Indian cricketer Virat Kohli condemning violence and sexual assault against women has been circulated and linked to the Kolkata doctor rape and murder case. However, D-Intent Data has found that this is an old video from 2017, and not related to the recent rape and murder of a Kolkata doctor.

Sharing the video on X (Formerly Twitter), @TheInspires_ wrote. “Listen What Virat Kohli Is Telling About Kolkata doctor rape and murder case And The Society We Live In”. Later, he deleted the post.

The truth about the video of Virat Kohli, Fact Check 

As soon as the posts containing the video of cricketer Kohli condemning the violence and sexual assault against women came to our notice, we conducted research and analysis of the video and found that the video was unrelated to the recent Kolkata doctor rape and murder case. 

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed a relevant keyword search on Google. This led us to media reports containing the same video of Virat Kohli, uploaded in January 2017. According to the media reports, the video shows Virat Kohli speaking out against the mass molestation incident that occurred in Bangalore during the new year in 2017. The video has no connection to the Kolkata case and is being misrepresented to mislead viewers.

During the research, we also found the video on Virat Kohli’s X(Formerly Twitter) account uploaded on January 6, 2024. Virat Kohli wrote This country should be safe & equal for all. Women shouldn’t be treated differently. Let’s stand together & put an end to such pathetic acts. He posted the video in two posts 1, 2.

Hence, it is evident from D-Intent Data’s Fact Check that the viral video of cricketer Virat condemning the violence and sexual assault against women is not related to the recent Kolkata doctor rape and murder case. But an old video of Virat speaking out against the mass molestation incident that occurred in Bangalore, in 2017.
