Fact Check: Old video of intense gunfire falsely linked to the recent clash between Afghanistan and Pakistan

A video showing intense gunfire is being circulated with the claim that it depicts clashes along the Durand Line, resulting in significant casualties among Pakistani forces. However, this claim is false. The video is an old clip that has been shared online since at least 2021. Reports indicate it shows a firefight between the Taliban and Afghan National Resistance Forces (NRF) in the Panjshir Valley in September 2021.

Sharing the video on X (Formerly Twitter) @salah_shoaib wrote. “Fierce clashes along Durand Line leave heavy casualties among Pakistani forces | 100 soldiers killed.”

Another propaganda account @ocjain4 also shared the video and wrote. “Taliban fighters have attacked the Pakistan Army on the Durand Line. 100+ Pakistani soldiers are reported to have reached heaven. On the other hand, the Arakan Army in Bangladesh has stolen all the bombs from the biggest arms depot there.” (Translated from Hindi)

Several other users and Influencers have also shared the video and made similar claims. Their posts can be seen here, @World_At_War_6 (2), @MonitorX99800, @KabulFrontline, @ippatel, @TrulyMonica, @eOrganiser.

The truth about the video of clash between Afghanistan and Pakistan, Fact Check

As soon as the posts containing the video and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the video. We found that the video was not recent but an old incident unrelated to the direct clash between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed a reverse image search of some key frames from the viral video using Google Lens. This led us to a media report containing the same visuals. According to the report, the video shows a firefight between the Taliban and Afghan National Resistance Forces (NRF) in the Panjshir Valley in September 2021.

Furthermore, we ran a relevant keyword search and found reports regarding the clash between the Taliban and Afghan National Resistance Forces (NRF) in the Panjshir Valley in September 2021.

Additionally, we found that the same video (1, 2) was circulated in 2023 with multiple misleading claims. Although reports indicate that 19 Pakistani soldiers and 3 Afghan civilians lost their lives, this particular video was unrelated to the recent border clash between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Therefore, it is evident from D-Intent Data’s Fact Check that the video was unrelated to the recent clash between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
