Fact Check: Old Video of Man Threatening Violence Over Power Disruption Misattributed to India

A video has recently been shared online depicting a man wearing a skull cap, who openly admits to stealing electricity and threatening violence if his power supply is disrupted. This video has been inaccurately attributed to India. However, D-Intent Data has found that the footage is actually from Pakistan dates back several years and does not pertain to India in any way.

Sharing the video on X (Formerly Twitter), propagandist account @jpsin1 wrote. I will steal electricity, I will not let the meter be installed, I will not let you check the junction box, I will not agree!! I will either die or be killed. This Taliban is being born within the country itself. Whether it is the police of India or the government employees of any department. They become like a wet cat in front of them, seeing how respectfully they are talking. If a Hindu had said the same thing. Then God knows from where the soul of Superman enters these government employees and they beat that Hindu to half-dead.

Several other users and influencers have also shared the video and made similar claims. Their posts can be seen here, @rameshofficial0, @atul0468

The truth about the viral video, Fact Check

As soon as the posts containing the video and claims came to our notice. We conducted research and analysis of the video and found that this video was not from India. But an old incident from Pakistan’s Karachi.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed a reverse image search of some key frames from the viral video on Google Lens. This led us to media reports and initial social posts containing the same video uploaded in July 2020. According to the reports, this is an old video from Karachi, Pakistan where the man was caught stealing electricity and threatened to kill if the electricity connection is disrupted.

Therefore, it is evident from initial posts and media reports that the viral video of a man threatening violence after he was caught stealing electricity is not from India. But an old incident from Pakistan.

Intent

Social media users, influencers and propagandists are circulating old videos from Pakistan with misleading claims to set their narrative based on religion in India.
