Fact Check: Old video of people trying to cross barbed wires and fences at India-Bangladesh border shared with misleading claims

A video showing a large crowd trying to cross barbed wires and fences has been circulating on social media. Many users, influencers, and propagandists have shared the video with the claim that it depicts Bangladeshi people gathering at the India-Bangladesh border in Assam following the violence in Bangladesh. However, a thorough investigation by D-Intent Data has revealed that the viral video is not recent and is unrelated to the ongoing violence in Bangladesh.

Sharing the video propagandist account @ajaychauhan4 wrote, India-Bangladesh border in Assam today’s scene. Later, he deleted the post.

Another user @MohanGowda_HJS has also shared the video and wrote, Visuals from India-Bangladesh border in Assam. Importance of Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019. The Government of India should immediately provide shelter & safety to the innocent Hindus of Bangladesh who suffered in such a situation under the CAA Act of India.

The truth about the viral video, Fact Check

As soon as the posts containing the video came to our notice, we conducted research and analysis of the video and found that the video is outdated and has no connection with the ongoing violence in Bangladesh.

To verify the claims made by the users, we performed a reverse image search of some key frames from the viral video on Google which led us to a YouTube video containing the same visuals uploaded on June 5, 2018.

According to the YouTube video uploader this video was recorded during ‘Milan Mela’ on 15 April 2018. These people are attempting to cross the barbed wires and fences to participate in Milan Mela where Indians and Bangladeshis meet to exchange gifts every year.

However, following the violence in Bangladesh, the situation is not good at the India-Bangladesh border, Indian Border Security Forces have issued a high alert to all units along the 4096 km India-Bangladesh border.

According to reports, The BSF on Wednesday thwarted a significant infiltration attempt by a large group of Bangladeshis along the International Border (IB) in West Bengal.

Hence, it is evident from D-Intent Data’s Fact Check that the video depicting a large crowd attempting to cross the barbed wires and fences at the India-Bangladesh border is not recent and has nothing to do with the ongoing violence in Bangladesh.

Intent

Influencers are circulating old videos from different incidents with misleading claims to set their narrative over the ongoing violence in Bangladesh.
