Fact Check: Old video of vandalized temple falsely linked to the recent violence in Bangladesh

A video has been circulated claiming it depicts recent vandalism at a Hindu temple in Bangladesh, specifically showing damage to the idol at the Kali temple located in Barobari, Ward No. 1 Chandpur village, within the Barhatta Khuri Union of Jakiganj upazila. The video suggests that this incident occurred last night. However, upon investigation, it has been confirmed that this footage is not recent but rather old, with its presence on the internet dating back to at least July 2021.

Sharing the video on X (Formerly Twitter) propagandist account @ajaychauhan41 wrote. “Attacks on Hindu temples continue in Bangladesh. Last night, someone vandalised the idol of Kali temple in Barobari of Chandpur village, Ward No. 1, Barhatta Khuri Union, Jakiganj Upazila.”(Translated from Hindi).

Fact Check on the viral video of Hindu temple in Bangladesh

As soon as the posts containing the video came to our notice, we conducted research and analysis of the video and found that the video was old and unrelated to the recent violence in Bangladesh.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed a reverse image search of some key frames from the viral video on Google Lens. This led us to an X (Twitter) post containing the same visuals uploaded in July 2021. Uploading the video on July 30, 2021, Raju Das (@RajuDas7777) wrote. “The idol of Kali Maa in the public temple of Motilal Sanyal’s house in Uttarpara village of Charkrishnanagar. Union of Sadar upazila of Faridpur district of Bangladesh was vandalized on Thursday morning on 29/07/2021. Police hv not yet made any arrests.
