Fact Check: Viral Video Falsely Claims Assam DGP Acted on Amit Shah’s Orders

Pakistani propaganda accounts are circulating a digitally altered video of Assam Director General of Police Harmeet Singh, IPS. The video falsely claims that he stated local Karbi community members and hunger-strike activists were arrested on the direct orders of the Union Home Ministry under Amit Shah. It also alleges that he said encroachment of grazing lands would continue. These claims are false. The video does not reflect any real statement made by the Assam DGP and has been digitally manipulated.

The digitally altered video was first shared by Pakistani propaganda account @InsiderWB, presenting it as a “Breaking” development. The account pushed the misleading narrative by attributing fabricated remarks to Assam DGP Harmeet Singh and framing the issue as politically motivated suppression ordered by the central government.

Truth: Original ANI Media Briefing Shows Assam DGP Made No Such Remarks

As the false claim gained traction on social media, it drew our attention. The D-Intent Data Team conducted a detailed frame-by-frame investigation and keyword research. We closely analysed the viral clip by examining lip movements, facial expressions, hand gestures, and audio synchronisation. This analysis revealed clear signs of digital manipulation, including mismatched audio and altered sequencing.

Our investigation first traced the manipulated visuals to a Facebook post by a local Assam-based news page, DIPHU LIVE, from where the clip was picked up, edited, and later weaponised by Pakistani propaganda accounts. To verify the original context, we tracked the footage further and identified the authentic source as an official ANI media briefing featuring Assam DGP Harmeet Singh on the violence in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts.

In the authentic briefing, Harmeet Singh explains that he met the protestors, clarified that the hunger-strike leader was taken to Guwahati for a medical check-up—not arrest—and detailed how violence erupted when protestors attempted to occupy a bridge, injuring 48 policemen. He makes no statement about acting on orders from the Home Ministry or Amit Shah and says nothing about continuing encroachment of grazing lands. The circulating video is therefore digitally altered and entirely fake.

Intent:

Propaganda accounts are circulating digitally altered videos of Assam DGP with self-invented claims to set their narrative against India.
