Fact-Check: Viral Video of Police Clash Falsely Linked to Nepal Protests

A video showing a mob attacking police personnel seated on the road and using riot shields is being falsely shared as footage from the ongoing protests in Nepal. In reality, the same video was circulated a week earlier during demonstrations in Indonesia. The riot shields in the clip clearly match those used by Indonesian police, not Nepal Police. While protests in Nepal have indeed turned violent, this particular video is not connected to the unrest there.

Several accounts, including @moliticsindia, @pantlp, and @SamarRaj_, posted the clip with captions such as:

“If you were in the army or government, what would you do with these GenZ youngsters? Watch the full video, form your opinion, then tell us.”

Although two of these accounts later deleted their posts, we have archived copies and screenshots of them.

Truth: Video Is From Indonesia, Not Nepal

As this claim gained traction, it drew our attention. The D-Intent Data Team conducted reverse image research, examined the video frame by frame, and verified with credible sources. Our findings show that the same video originated from Indonesia and is at least 10 days old. The riot shields visible in the footage belong to Indonesian police. YouTube channel RAKYAT BERSATUAssociated Press, and several accounts such as @Cenas_e_coisas3 and @irsandiabas2002 confirmed it as part of Indonesian protests. Reports state that riot police violently dispersed hundreds of students angered by lavish parliamentary allowances.

Further coverage by @ANI, @chude__, @Selfmade258, and @dailytimespress highlighted that Indonesia is currently facing widespread protests, triggered by government perks and intensified after the killing of a motorcycle taxi driver by a police vehicle in Jakarta.

International media portals also reported on the unrest: Anarchist Federation: “Archipelago of Fire – Uprising in Indonesia”ABC Indonesia: “International call for solidarity to the arrested, disappeared and killed”, SMH: “Police chief apologises after riot vehicle crushes man during Jakarta protest”, Bloomberg: “Thousands Clash With Police in Jakarta as Protests Intensify”

This confirms the viral clip has no connection to Nepal’s protests.

Intent

Propaganda accounts are circulating unrelated videos without context to mislead the public and distort narratives about the unrest in Nepal.
