Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh — Video Of a Man Beating Up a Boy Circulated With Communal Claims: Fact-Check

A few days ago, a video surfaced on social media showing a man mercilessly beating a teen wearing a skull cap in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, the video was widely shared, with many highlighting the religious identity of the victim and claiming that a Muslim boy was beaten up in the presence of police.

The video with misleading claims was shared by pro-Muslim accounts and critics of the present BJP Government, such as @TheMuslim786, @ASP4UP, @_Imanutripathi5, @007AliSohrab, @rock_mansoori, and @Satyamooknayak. These accounts circulated the video highlighting the religious identity of the victim to propagate a certain narrative.

The Incident

The incident took place in Jajmau, Kanpur, where a minor Muslim boy was kicked and beaten in front of the police. The people present at the scene managed to save the child. The police swung into action after the video of the assault went viral on social media. Based on the video, Mohammad Faisal, a resident of Ganga Vihar KDA Colony, Jajmau, was arrested.

During interrogation, it was revealed that the minor was also riding his scooter and both of them had a minor collision. Mohammad Faisal became so angry about this that he brutally beat the minor. However, contrary to the communal spin given to the incident, it had nothing to do with religion. Both the victim and the accused belong to the same community.

Police Action

Initially, the police caught Faisal from the spot and released him. People of the area reported that Faisal was arrested by the Jajmau police station but later released after collusion. The Kanpur victim’s family claimed that Jajmau police station in-charge Arvind Singh had said that he had beaten the minor Muslim boy as much as he could and that much punishment had been received. That’s why he was left.

However, after the video went viral, DCP East gave instructions to take action in this matter. Following these instructions, Faisal was arrested again.
