Delhi— Authorities Removed Illegal Construction, Propagandists Circulate Communal Claims: Fact-Check 

According to reports, “Mama Bhanja Dargah” on Rani Jhansi Road in New Delhi was destroyed over night on January 3. On Tuesday at 2:00 PM, PWD sent out a notice requesting ownership documentation by 3:30 PM.

Verified accounts on twitter, including The Observer Post (“@TheObserverPost“) tweeted “Mama Bhanja Dargah on Rani Jhansi road in New Delhi was abruptly demolished overnight on January 3rd, following a short notice from the Public Works Department (PWD) demanding proof of ownership, according to the caretaker. The Imam of the nearby Masjid reported that the demolition took place at 3 AM.” on Jan 3, 2024.

@HateDetectors tweeted “In #NewDelhi, Mamu Bhanje Dargah that stood on the Rani Jhansi road was demolished overnight on 3rd January. The caretaker of the Dargah said that he received a notice from PWD at 2 PM on Tuesday and was asked to give proof of ownership by 3 PM. According to the Imam of the adjacent Masjid, the dargah was demolished at 3 AM.” . The tweet has received an about more than 1k views on X.

Several other accounts, including Ali Sohrab (“@007AliSohrab“), @farzeeiqbal, Crime Reports India (“@AsianDigest“), @IAMCHindi,
@iamharunkhan also made the same claim that a bulldozer ran over the “Mamu Bhanje Dargah” on Rani Jhansi Road in Delhi and demolished it. The archive can be read from above.

What is the Actual Truth About this Incident? : Fact

In actuality, a temple was also demolished in addition to Dargah, and the notice against the illegal occupation was received one day prior to the action. A similar event occurred in August 2023 when officials demolished an unauthorised  constructed section of the Dargah and Temple. Illegal construction has recently surfaced in front of the Dargah and Temple. Therefore, the PWD took the initiative to demolish that illegal construction again.

An article was published by ETV Bharat, regarding the same incident on Jan 3, 2024 with the headline “रानी झांसी रोड स्थित मामा-भांजे की मजार पर चला बुलडोजर”. It clarified that using a bulldozer, PWD officials demolished the encroachment near Jhansi Road in Delhi.  On Wednesday, January 2, 2024, Delhi Police, Paramilitary Forces, and PWD officials were present for the demolition. The Delhi Police booth and the illegal stores constructed on Rani Jhansi Road were also taken down. Another article was also published by ETV Bharat on August 20, 2023 with the headline “रानी झांसी रोड स्थित मामू-भांजे की मजार पर चला बुलडोजर, पिप्लेश्वर मंदिर भी आया कार्रवाई की जद में”. The article also clarified the incident in details.

Propagandists are circulating false claims to set their propaganda based on religion. It has been claimed that the “Mama Bhanja Dargah” on Rani Jhansi Road in New Delhi was demolished overnight on January 3rd. A notice from PWD was issued at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, requesting proof of ownership by 3 p.m. But, after proper research, analysis and fact-checking, we have discovered that not only was the Dargah demolished, but a temple was also demolished; in actuality, the notice was received one day prior to the action against the illegal occupation. When officials demolished an illegally built portion of the Dargah and Temple in August 2023, there was a similar incident documented. Recently, illegal construction appeared in front of the Temple & Dargah. Hence, the PWD took the initiative and demolished that illegal construction again.


Fact : The notice was received a day before the action against the illegal occupation, and a temple, in addition to the Dargah, was demolished. A similar incident occurred in August 2023, when authorities removed an illegally constructed portion of the Dargah and Temple. Recently, illegal construction has appeared in front of the Temple and Dargah. As a result, the PWD took the initiative to demolish the illegal construction once more.
