Police Detain anti-CAA Protestors at Delhi University, Propagandists Circulate Communal Claims: Fact-Check

There have been claims that Hindu women in India physically attack Muslim women without cause, based on a video that has gone viral showing policewomen removing a group of women.

Verified accounts on twitter, including @stairwayto3dom tweeted “Hindu women BRUTALLY assault Muslim women for NO REASON in India!” on March 16, 2024. The tweet has received an about 174k views on X.

What is the Actual Truth About this Incident? : Fact

The truth is that at Delhi University, these policewomen are detaining anti-CAA demonstrators. The assertions are unfounded and inaccurate. It is unrelated to religion.

We visited Hindustan Times, which published an article on this incident on March 13, 2024 with the headline “Anti-CAA protests: 55 Delhi University students detained amid planned agitation”. During their protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act’s implementation, 55 Delhi University students were held by the Delhi Police. One day following the central government’s implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019, fifty-five Delhi University students were detained by the Delhi Police for demonstrating against the new law. According to the authorities, the students were detained from the DU Arts Faculty.
