A purportedly authentic photo of Mahatma Gandhi with a woman in close proximity has being circulated.

@NishaSh19283189 tweeted the picture and wrote “Bapu just a few hours before he launched Qu!t India Moment.” on April 6, 2024. The tweet has received an about 11.1k views on X.

This image, however, is entirely digitally altered and unrelated to reality. In the original photograph, taken in 1946 in Bombay (now Mumbai), Mahatma Gandhi is seated next to former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. We visited Times of India, which posted the original picture in an article published on Feb 20, 2024 with the headline “This is the huge number of Indian villages named after historical figures”. For further clarification, we also went to flickr, which also posted about the picture with the caption “Bespectacled Mahatma Gandhi, who eventually led India to its independence, laughs with the man who was to be the nation’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, at the All-India Congress committee meeting in Bombay on July 6, 1946.
