Fact Check: Image of armed individual at a market in Myanmar falsely linked to Kuki Militant in Manipur

An image circulating on social media shows an individual carrying a weapon in a market, with the claim that it depicts a Kuki militant from Manipur, India. However, this claim is misleading and false. Upon closer examination, it has been revealed that the image was actually taken in Khampat, Myanmar, and not in Manipur. The individual in the photo is not connected to the ongoing conflict in Manipur, and the image has been falsely associated with the region.

Sharing the image on X (Formerly Twitter) @singh_nepr99581 wrote. “Why there is different law inside state of manipur,in valley villages volunteer who defend there homeland are being captured arrested or kill,while at hill areas kuki militant openly move freely with foreign made M series auto weapon,nobody dare to captured them,where is the law?”

As soon as the posts containing the image and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the image and found that the image was not from Manipur but from Myanmar.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed a reverse image using Google Lens. This led us to a YouTube video containing the same visuals. According to the YouTube uploader the video was taken in Khampat, Myanmar on 19 December 2024.

Therefore, it is evident from D-Intent Data’s Fact Check that the viral image of an armed individual in the market was not from Manipur but from Myanmar.
