Fact Check: An old video of a clash between two groups of the Muslim community in Bangladesh resurfaced with misleading claims

A video showing two groups engaged in a fight is being shared with the false claim that the clash occurred in Bangladesh over a dispute related to performing Halala for a woman, resulting in 12 deaths. However, the truth is that this video dates back to September 2024 and depicts a conflict between the followers of Mufti Waliur Rahman Khan and Maulana Mufti Rahul Amin at the Baitul Mukarram Mosque over the position of Khatib. The video is outdated, and the claims being circulated are misleading.

Sharing the video on X (Formerly Twitter) propagandist account @ocjain4 wrote, “In the dispute that started in Bangladesh over who would perform the halala of a beautiful woman, till now 12 people of Tablighi Jamaat have reached 72 fairies (houri)..!” (Translated from Hindi)

Another propaganda account @MrNationalistJJ also shared the video and wrote, In the pursuit of Halala on beautiful women, a huge fight broke out among Islamists in Bangladesh. Until now, 12 Islamists attained Hooriyat!

Several other users, influencers and propagandists have also disseminated the video and made similar claims. Their posts can be seen here, @aruhirathod100, @ImSoniya24, @CMBhardwaj1

The truth about the viral video from Bangladesh, Fact Check

As soon as the posts containing the video and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the video and found that the incident was old and unrelated to Halala.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed a reverse image search of some key frames from the viral video using Google Lens. This led us to media reports containing the same visuals published in September 2024. According to the reports (1, 2, 3), this video dates back to September 2024 and depicts a conflict between the followers of Mufti Waliur Rahman Khan and Maulana Mufti Rahul Amin at the Baitul Mukarram Mosque over an internal dispute.

On September 20, 2024, tensions flared at Baitul Mukarram Mosque in Dhaka when a scuffle broke out between followers of two Khatibs—Mufti Waliur Rahman Khan (current) and Maulana Mufti Ruhul Amin (former). Ruhul Amin, who had previously fled, returned with his supporters, triggering a confrontation. Several were injured. The army, police, and RAB intervened to restore order. After the situation calmed, Friday prayers proceeded.

Therefore, it is evident from D-Intent Data’s Fact Check that the viral video was not recent. But an old incident over mosque politics between followers of two religious leaders.
