Fact Check: An Old video of students caught red-handed while cheating in Barabanki circulated with misleading claims

A video showing an individual recording live footage of cheating in an exam hall is being shared with the claim that widespread cheating is occurring during the IAS exam in Uttar Pradesh. However, the truth is that this video is from February 2024, when a student captured cheating during an LLB exam at a law college in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh.

Sharing the video on X (Formerly Twitter), @DrRakeshprj wrote, “In Uttar Pradesh, cheating is being done openly in the IAS exam. PM Narendra Modi had already recruited IAS officers in the Prime Minister’s Office in the name of lateral entry without any examination. Now officers like collectors will also pass by cheating and run the country.” (Translated from Hindi).

Another account, @LoktantraX, also disseminated the video and wrote, “What more development will we see in this Amrit Kaal. Now anyone can become an IAS, no preparation is needed”. (Translated from Hindi). Later, the post was deleted.

Several other users and Influencers have also disseminated the video and made similar claims. Their posts can be seen here, @QuadeerAhmed, @ganeshkgav18652.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed relevant keywords searches and found multiple reports regarding the video. According to reports (1, 2, 3), In a shocking incident of mass cheating, an LLB examination held at City Law College in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh, on February 27, 2024, was marred by blatant malpractice. Not only were students openly copying from guides and notes, but they were also doing so collectively throughout the examination.

Furthermore, the scandal was exposed through a Facebook Live video by Shivam Singh, a student from TRC Law College, who revealed the rampant cheating by capturing students openly using unauthorized materials during the exam.

Additionally, it is important to note that the UPSC 2025 Civil Services Examination (CSE) prelims exam is scheduled (1, 2) for May 25, 2025, and the mains exam is scheduled for August 22, 2025.

Therefore, it is evident from verified sources that the video was old and unrelated to the IAS or UPSC exam.
