Fact Check: China crossed LAC, entered Indian territory and established two new counties?

Claims are circulating that China has entered Indian territory and established two new counties. However, these claims are factually incorrect, as the matter pertains to the Aksai Chin region. MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, “We have lodged a solemn protest with the Chinese side through diplomatic channels.” The protest from the Indian side came after Chinese news agency Xinhua reported on December 27, 2024, that the authorities in northwest Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region had declared the formation of He’an County and Hekang County, in the Hotan Prefecture.

Sharing a video on X (Formerly Twitter) @iamharmeetK wrote, “Narender Modi should be Tried for TREASON for openly Lying to the People of India on National Media. Until Yesterday, Modi Claimed that “ No One had Entered & No One had Been Allowed to Enter and Thus Gave the Clear Chit to China. Now, the Modi Government Spokesperson Admits that China has Actually Built Two Villages in India’s Territory..!!

INC Kerala has also made a post and wrote “Hope 8 PM Excellency will firmly declare. ‘Na koi ghusa hai, na hi koi ghusaya hai.”

Several other users, influencers, propagandists and political workers have also disseminated the claims. Their posts can be seen here, @__Amoxicillin_, @NAVANGULTEJAS, @Swamy39, @ranvijaylive, @DrLaxman_Yadav, @s_afreen7

The truth behind the claims about Indian territory, Fact Check

As soon as the post containing the claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis regarding the claims. We found that the matter pertained to Aksai Chin, not inside the LAC.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed relevant keyword searches and found media reports and MEA statements regarding the situation. According to reports, MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated. “We have lodged a solemn protest with the Chinese side through diplomatic channels.” The protest from the Indian side came after Chinese news agency Xinhua reported on December 27, 2024, that the authorities in northwest Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region had declared the formation of He’an County and Hekang County, in the Hotan Prefecture. The Hotan Prefecture, also known as Khotan in India, contains parts of Aksai Chin that India accuses China of occupying and the formation of the two new counties appears like Beijing firming up administrative measures in the region. China captured the region in the 1950s and solidified its military grip during the 1962 Indo-China conflict.

Therefore, it is evident from D-Intent Data’s Fact Check that the claims about China crossing the LAC and entering Indian territory were false and misleading.
