Fact Check: Declared foreigners, 28 in Assam sent to ‘transit camp’ propagandists circulated misleading claims

A video currently being circulated claims that a police vehicle in Assam’s Barpeta district is transporting 28 Muslims—comprising 9 women and 19 men—to a detention camp. This video implies a religious or discriminatory motive behind their detention. However, according to reports, these 28 individuals are foreign nationals, not Indian citizens. They are being relocated to transit camps in Assam as part of standard administrative procedures. The situation has no connection to religion or any discriminatory practices involving Indian citizens.

Sharing the video on X (Formerly Twitter) propagandist account “Dhruv Rathee Parody (@dhruvrahtee) wrote. In Assam’s Barpeta district, 28 Muslims have been sent to a detention camp, including 9 women and 19 men. This is happening under the rule of BJP govt”.

Several other users, influencers and propagandists have also shared the video and made similar claims. Their posts can be seen here, @ShamsTabrezQ, @WasimAkramTyagi

The truth about the claims, Fact Check

As soon as the posts containing the video and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the entire event and found that the video was not related to religious discrimination and Indian citizens.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed a relevant keyword search on Google. Eventually, this led us to multiple media reports regarding the detention of 28 people in Assam. According to the media reports, Police in western Assam’s Barpeta district sent 28 people declared non-citizens by the Foreigners’ Tribunals (FTs) to a ‘transit camp’ at Matia in the Goalpara district on Monday (September 2, 2024). Transit camp is the official term for the 3,000-capacity detention centre for foreigners to be deported.

Sushanta Biswa Sarma, the district SP told journalists in district headquarters Barpeta that the individuals were declared as foreign nationals after extensive search operations and legal scrutiny. “The police acted on the tribunal’s directive and ensured the transportation of the declared foreigners to the transit camp,” he said, underscoring the government’s efforts to identify and detain people suspected to be living in Assam illegally.

Therefore, it is evident from verified sources that these 28 people are declared foreign nationals and have nothing to do with Indian citizens and discrimination against a group of people. They are not Indian nationals but illegal immigrants.
