Fact Check: Video of a train navigating through a series of tunnels in China, falsely shared as Rishikesh, India

A video showcasing a train navigating through a series of tunnels carved into a steep hillside alongside a scenic body of water has been widely shared on social media with the misleading claim that it was filmed in Rishikesh, India. However, upon closer verification, it has been confirmed that the video is actually from China. It depicts a train travelling through multiple tunnels in Cili County, located in Hunan Province.

Sharing the video on X (Formerly Twitter) @Modified_Hindu9 wrote, “Modi did nothing for the nation? The railway reached Karnaprayag for the first time after 76 years of Independence. The ambitious project includes 17 tunnels, one of which is 15.1 km long, and 19 railway bridges over rivers.” (Translated from Hindi).

Another account @Vini__007 also shared the video and wrote, “Beautiful scene.. Rishikesh to Karnaprayag railway route has an amazing view, I can’t believe that this is India!” (Translated from Hindi)

Several other users and Influencers have also disseminated the video and made similar claims. Their posts can be seen here, @rudraashagmail1, @Devilal_Saini69.

The truth about the video of a train, Fact Check

As soon as the posts containing the video and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the video. We found that the video was not from India but from China.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed a reverse image search of some key frames from the viral video using Google Lens. This led us to media reports and social media posts (1, 2, 3) containing the video. According to credible and verified sources the video depicts a train travelling through multiple tunnels in Cili County, located in Hunan Province. Hence, the landscape and infrastructure seen in the footage have no connection to India, and the claim linking it to Rishikesh is completely inaccurate.
