Fact Check: Extremists entered house of a Hindu family and forcibly raped wife infront of her husband and children in Bangladesh?

A video depicting a man and a woman in a compromising situation, caught by a group of people, has been falsely circulated with the claim that extremists entered the home of a Hindu family in Bangladesh and committed a heinous act of violence, including the alleged rape of a wife in front of her husband and children. This narrative falsely suggests that the incident was a religiously motivated hate crime targeting a Hindu family. However, the video is unrelated to such claims. It is, in fact, an older recording from March 2024, which recently resurfaced and went viral.

Sharing the video on X (Formerly Twitter), propaganda account @MithilaWaala wrote, Jamaat- e- Islami terr0rists entered the house of a Hindu family and forcibly r@ped the lady infront of her husband and children’s in Bangladesh. This is the condition of women, especially Hindu women in Bangladesh, since the August 5 takeover of power by the radical Muslim party.

Another propaganda account, @yati_Official1, also disseminated the video and wrote, “Another shocking video coming from Bangladesh. What is happening in Bangladesh? Where is the Human Rights Commission? (A Hindu family is being tortured) Can’t they see the atrocities happening to Hindus in Bangladesh?” (Translated from Hindi).

The truth about the video, Fact Check

As soon as the posts containing the video and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the video. We found that the video was old and unrelated to religious hate crime and rape.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed a reverse image search of some keyframes from the viral video using Google Lens. This led us to initial posts and media reports regarding the incident. According to the reports (1, 2), the footage is linked to Munshiganj Jail jailer Nur Mohammad Mridha and a prisoner’s wife, who were caught in a compromising situation by a group of people. As per the reports, at the time of the incident, Nur Mohammad was serving at Magura District Jail and had engaged in an immoral relationship with the prisoner’s wife. After the video went viral, the matter was reported to the district administration, police department, and jail authorities. This incident is entirely unrelated to any religious hate crimes against Hindus.

Therefore, it is evident from verified sources that the video was old and unrelated to religious hate crimes.
