Fact Check: Illegal Bangladeshi in Assam demanding a separate country in India? No, old video resurfaced with misleading claims

A video showing a crowd protesting and clashing with police has been circulated with the false claim that illegal Bangladeshi migrants in Assam are demanding a separate country in India. However, D-Intent Data has discovered that this is an old video from 2017, depicting protests against the alleged harassment of “D” (doubtful) voters by the Border Police and Foreigners Tribunals in Assam’s Goalpara District.

Sharing the video on X (Formerly Twitter) serial fake news peddler and propagandist account @ajaychauhan41 wrote. A group of Bangladeshi Miya Muslims in Assam held a rally demanding a separate country.They also raised ‘Azadi’ slogans. They were treated immediately by Assam Police. Most of the Bangladeshi Miya Muslim group ran back like headless chickens with their ‘Azadi slogans’.

The truth about the viral video, Fact Check 

As soon as the posts containing the video and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the video and found that the video was not recent. But an old video from 2017 and unrelated to illegal Bangladeshi demanding a separate country in India.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed a reverse image search of some key frames from the viral video on Google Lens. This led us to initial posts (1, 2) and media reports containing the same visuals. According to the media reports(1, 2), this is an old video depicting people protesting against the alleged harassment of “D” (doubtful) voters by the Border Police and Foreigners Tribunals in Assam’s Goalpara District in 2017.

Therefore, it is evident from verified sources that the viral video was not recent. But an old video from 2017 and unrelated to the demand of a separate country in India.
