Two women thrashed by two men in front of the shops. Unfortunately, the video of the incident went viral on social media, and the story got twisted as it traveled. The old video was shared with a false context, making it seem like a recent event, and the description suggested that the women were either mindlessly attacking the men or doing so in the name of feminism; the most interesting part was that people shared it using hashtags like Men Lives Matter, Gender Equality, equality served and many more.
But after digging deeper, it came to light that the video is over 2 years old and the whole narrative around it was skewed. The specific video everyone’s talking about shows a woman hitting a man with a stick, which then leads to the two men reacting physically. The whole incident was covered by a local news portal, cginfo on their website.
We found out that this video is from 2021 and it comes from a place in Chhattisgarh’s Baloda Bazar district. The situation in the video is actually about something else. The woman in the video was forced by her husband to come into a sexual relationship with a local leader, but she refuse to do so. Upset about her husband’s strange demand, the woman went to the local leader’s shop to confront him and her husband. Sadly, things got worse, and both the leader and her husband ended up beating the woman and her daughter. Later, the Chattisgarh Police took action against the two men.
The video was initially uploaded with the wrong context by self-proclaimed ‘Men Rights Activist’ Shonee Kapoor (@ShoneeKapoor) and then the same video was picked up by a popular Twitter handle @gharkekalesh, a handle known for uploading videos of various fights or physical assaults. Sadly, people enjoy watching others fight which is why the above-mentioned has got around 172K followers. Unfortunately, the specifically mentioned video was perpetuated with the wrong context only to garnish or entertain some followers and remain in social media’s spotlight.
After conducting an extensive analysis, our team engaged in fact-checking the claim. You can find the results of this investigation in the Twitter thread embedded below for your reference. For a better understanding of the situation, we have given the link to the cginfo’s news article.
