A few days ago, news started spreading on social media, mainly shared by regular people and some self-declared media groups. This news talked about a distressing incident in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh. They said a Dalit man named Sachin was brutally beaten to death and his wife was raped. The reason supposedly was that Sachin didn’t give sweets to some miscreants on the occasion of his newborn baby.
The news was initially spread by certain self-proclaimed media outlets, including @TheNewsBreak and @TheShudra, both of which have a history of disseminating misleading information. Despite claiming to advocate for the rights of Dalits and lower castes, their pattern of promoting fake news suggests a different motive.
When our team dug deeper, we found a different story, contrary to the big claims, the Bareilly Police clarified that what happened to Sachin wasn’t a planned attack fuelled by caste differences. On July 11, Sachin and a guy named Akash had a disagreement about sharing sweets or “laddoos.” This happened in Piparthala village in Bareilly district.
After the fight, Sachin left the village and went to his mother’s house, located elsewhere. Unfortunately, his health deteriorated and despite several medical efforts, Sachin passed away on July 30. While his body was brought back to his village, the police were not informed of the situation at the time.
Following a complaint lodged by Sachin’s mother on August 1, the police promptly initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Sachin’s death. Subsequently, three individuals were arrested as accused parties in the case. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities seek to uncover the complete truth of what happened with Sachin.
Contrary to the original claims of rape directed towards Sachin’s wife, the Bareilly Police also clarified that no evidence or credible report supports such allegations. The investigation into the incident is comprehensive and includes all relevant aspects. Bareilly Police took their official Twitter account to debunk fake news being circulated on social media and to inform about the arrest.
By perpetuating false claims, some self-proclaimed outlets seem to aim at sowing discord and disharmony among different communities. After conducting an extensive and thorough analysis, our team engaged in fact-checking the claim. You can find the results of this investigation in the Twitter thread embedded below for your reference.
CLAIM: A Dalit man was beaten to death and miscreants raped his wife after he didn’t give sweets to them.
FACT: Sachin had a fight over the sweets but he died as his health deteriorated and his wife was not raped.
In our pursuit of accurate and unbiased information, we’ve diligently fact-checked the claims surrounding the incident. Misinformation can sow discord and disrupt communal harmony.
