Fact Check: ‘India–India’ chants at Republican National Convention in Milwaukee?

On July 15, 2024, former US President Donald Trump announced Ohio Senator JD Vance as his vice-presidential nominee at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Vance greeted the delegates at the RNC with his wife, Usha Chilukuri Vance, who is of Indian origin.

Now, a video has gone viral on social media platforms allegedly showing Vance greeting delegates amid ‘India–India’ chants at Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. However, D-Intent Data has found that this video has been digitally altered and has nothing to do with reality.

Digitally altered video disseminated

Several users, influencers, and propagandists have shared the video purportedly showing Republican vice-presidential candidate JD Vance greeting the delegates amid the chants of ‘India-India’.

Sharing the video, @JaunAmerica on X (Formerly Twitter) wrote, “India India” chants as JD Vance brings soon to be second lady Usha Chilukuri into the RNC convention.

Another user @White_Tribe_ shared the video and captioned, “India India” chants as JD Vance brings soon to be second lady Usha Chilukuri into the RNC convention The new Republican Party. It just keeps getting better.

A propagandist and racist account @Pajeet_Invasion has also disseminated the video and said. USA “India India” chant as JD Vance brings soon to be second lady Usha Chilukuri into the RNC convention. Now Indian invaders are taking over US politics.

Patrick Brauckmann (@vonbrauckmann) has also shared the video and projected it as a real video.

Truth about the viral video, Fact Check

As soon as the posts containing the video came to our knowledge, we conducted research and found that the video is not real but digitally altered.

During research we found several video reports of the convention on different social media platforms like YouTube, X(Formerly Twitter).

The original video shows JD Vance walking and greeting the delegates with his wife amid America First by Merle Haggard playing. The ‘India-India’ chants have been added in the original video.

Media personality Benny Johnson posted the original video on X, and captioned. JUST IN: JD Vance walks into RNC convention.

Similar video can be seen on The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), In which ‘India-India’ chants are not heard anywhere.

Hence, it is evident from D-Intent Data’s Fact Check, that the video purportedly showing a crowd chanting ‘India-India’ at RNC in Milwaukee is digitally altered.

Intent

Influencers and propagandists are circulating digitally altered videos from RNC to target Vance’s wife because she is of Indian origin.
