Fact Check: Indian Railways floats ₹20,000-cr RFP for cameras in coaches?

A report is being circulated claiming that the Indian Railways has floated a request for proposal (RFP) worth ₹20,000 crores for the installation of CCTV cameras in 40,000 coaches as part of an initiative to enhance safety and surveillance across the railway network. However, the Ministry of Railways has categorically denied these claims, labelling the news as completely false and baseless.

Sharing the report on X (Formerly Twitter) @INCKerala wrote, “NEW LOOT PLAN | Let’s do some simple math. ₹20,000 Cr for 40,000 coaches translates to ₹50 lakh per coach. The requirement is 6 to 8 cameras per coach. Assuming 8 cameras per coach, this works out to an average cost of ₹6.25 lakh per camera.” Read the full post here.

The truth about the report related to Indian Railways, Fact Check 

As soon as the posts containing the report and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis regarding the report and found that the report was not based on official sources.

To verify the claims made by the users. We ran a relevant keyword search and found a statement from the Ministry of Railways on X (Formerly Twitter). The Ministry of Railways has categorically denied these claims, labelling the news as completely false and baseless.

In the official statement, the Ministry stated, “This is fake news. No such tender has been floated, nor has any RFP been issued by Indian Railways. Moreover, Financial Express has deleted the report from its platform.

Therefore, it is evident from verified sources that the report about the Indian Railways spending ₹20,000 crores for the installation of CCTV cameras in coaches was not true.

Influencers and political parties are circulating misleading reports to set their narrative against the Indian Railways and the government.
