Fact Check: Video of mob assault on woman in Narayanganj, Bangladesh circulated with communal claims

A video depicting a group of people harassing and torturing a woman in the nighttime view has been shared claiming that a Hindu woman was raped and tortured by extremists in Bangladesh. The fact is that these claims are not true. According to police, a group of robbers were preparing to commit robbery in an autorickshaw and villagers chased them.

Sharing the video on X (Formerly Twitter) propagandist account @FarazPervaiz3 wrote, “Highly Graphic: A #Hindu woman was Brutally raped and tortured in Araihazar village of Narayanganj. This is how the Muslims made fun of her, with no one coming forward to help her! Religious minorities are not safe in Bangladesh”.

Another propaganda account @RealBababanaras also shared the video and wrote, “Dear World. If you are silent, You are also partners in these sins. Reportedly Another Hindu woman was r@ped & tortured by Radical Islamists in the Narayanganj district of Bangladesh. The atrocities against Hindus,Christians & Buddhists continue in Bangladesh #SaveBangladeshiHindus”.

The truth about the viral video from Bangladesh, Fact Check

As soon as the posts containing the video and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the video. We found that the incident was not related to religious hate crimes against Hindus.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed a reverse image search of some key frames from the viral video using Google Lens. This led us to media reports containing the same visuals. According to the reports (1, 2), the police said, a group of robbers were preparing to commit robbery in an autorickshaw and villagers chased them. At that time, other members of the robber gang fled, but the mob caught Billal and their associate Lovely. Billal died on the spot after being beaten by angry villagers. At that time, his associate Lovely jumped into a canal for self-defence.

Although minorities in Bangladesh are facing extreme violence, this video is unrelated to religious hate crimes against minorities.

Therefore, it is evident from verified sources that the video was not related to religious hate crimes. It was related to robbery and no credible sources suggest that the woman was from the Hindu community.
