Fact Check: Old image of father holding hand of his lifeless daughter during Turkey-Syria earthquake, shared as Palestine

An image that shows a father holding the hand of his lifeless daughter sticking out of rubble has gone viral on social media platforms. The image is shared by Palestinian supporters with the claim that a Palestinian father holding the hand of his dead child stuck under the rubble of his house was killed by Israeli bombing. However, D-Intent Data has found that this is an old image from the Turkey-Syria earthquake. And has nothing to do with the Israel-Palestine conflict.

False claims disseminated by propagandists for the father holding the hand of his lifeless daughter

Serial fake news peddler, propagandists and self-proclaimed journalist @ShaykhSulaiman shared the image on X (Formerly Twitter) and wrote. “A father holding the hand of his dead child stuck under the rubble of his house killed by Israeli bombing. THIS IS HEARTBREAKING” He later deleted the post.

Another account @AbujomaaGaza has also shared the same image and said, It is not part of a fiction film… It is a reality in Gaza.. Father holding hand of his son who was killed in Israeli bombing and trapped under the rubble of his house!.

Truth about the viral image where a father holding the hand of his lifeless daughter, Fact Check

As soon as the posts containing the image came to our knowledge, we tried to find if the claims made by users are true or false. We did a reverse image search on Google which led us to several media reports containing the same image.

According to the media reports. This is an old image from Turkey, showing a man named Mesut Hançer holding the hand of his daughter Irmak. Who was killed during the deadly earthquake in Turkey and Syria in February 2023.

During research, we found the same image on Daily Mail, The Japan Times and renowned stock photography platform “Getty Images”. As per all the sources. The image depicts a man named Mesut Hancer holds the hand of his 15-year-old daughter Irmak. Who died in the earthquake in Kahramanmaras, close to the quake’s epicentre. The day after a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the country’s southeast, on February 7, 2023.

Hence, it is evident from D-Intent Data’s Fact Check that the viral image is not from the Israel-Palestine conflict but an old image from the Turkey-Syria earthquake, 2023.
