Fact Check: Old train derailment image falsely linked to Bengaluru-Kamakhya Express derailment near Nirgundi station, Cuttack

An image showing a train derailment, with a locomotive leaning heavily to one side after veering off the tracks, is being circulated with the claim that it depicts the Bengaluru-Kamakhya Express derailment near Nergundi station in Cuttack. However, our investigation reveals that the image is from the derailment of the Howrah- Mumbai Mail in Jharkhand’s West Singhbhum district in July 2024.

Sharing the image on X (Formerly Twitter), @Dirilis_Shahid wrote, “11 coaches of Bengaluru-Kamakhya Express derail near Nergundi station in Cuttack #ReelMantri @AshwiniVaishnaw: “Bhagyawaan, Camera nikalo, ek aur Reel banani hai.”

Another account, @Jagseerakvan, also shared the image and wrote, “25 injured as 11 coaches of Bengaluru-Kamakhya Express derail near Nergundi station in Cuttack”

The truth about the photo of train derailment, Fact Check 

As soon as the posts containing the image and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of images. We found that the image was old and unrelated to Bengaluru-Kamakhya Express derailment near Nergundi station in Cuttack.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed a reverse image search using Google Lens. This led us to media reports containing the same image. According to the reports (1, 2), this is an old image from the derailment of the Howrah- Mumbai Mail in Jharkhand’s West Singhbhum district in July 2024.

Therefore, it is evident from verified sources that the image was old and unrelated to the Bengaluru-Kamakhya Express derailment near Nergundi station in Cuttack.

Influencers are circulating old images with misleading claims to get the spotlight on social media.
